The magpie carries a long tradition in British folklore, most famously captured in the rhyme: “One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, four for a boy.”

Each nest is painted in pink or blue, with three eggs for a girl and four for a boy. The final egg is gilded, symbolising joy and the preciousness of new life.
